Brighton demo Saturday July 12th: “Stop the bombing, stop the killing!”

July 13, 2014

The demo was covered by the Argus July 14 2014

A first-hand report from one of the organisers of Saturday’s vigil, rally and march in Brighton city centre:

“First of all a huge ‘well done’ to everyone who came out this morning for our protest about the continuing awful situation in Gaza.

For the sake of those who weren’t able to make it:

old steine 12 july 2014 At 11.00am protesters from Brighton, Lewes, Crawley and other places, gathered at the War Memorial on the Old Steine – one of over 70 protests happening worldwide this weekend. The names and ages of those Palestinians who have lost their lives (unfortunately not up-to-date as overnight more deaths were caused by Israeli attacks) were read out by volunteers.
After this it was decided that we should march up towards the city centre. By now our numbers were probably over 100, including many local Palestinians. Led by a huge Palestinian flag, with banners and the brilliant model drone flying high we made our way up to Churchill Square, handing out leaflets (which had to be rapidly reprinted on the hoof) and with chants of ‘Israel – shame on you!’ and ‘Stop the bombing, stop the killing!’ Gaza demo Brighton-140712-508-2

We then returned to the Old Steine with members of the public spontaneously joining with us. We also bumped into another march (I think anti-fracking) coming the opposite way, where a moment of mutual solidarity took place (only in Brighton!). The stall, which had remained by the War Memorial, took countless donations and petition signatures.

We were joined briefly by Caroline Lucas, the MP for Brighton Pavilion, who stopped by our stall to sign our petition, to talk to us about the current crisis, and to give us her support and solidarity for our demonstration.

Before dispersing we held a minute’s silence to signal our sorrow and solidarity with the people of Gaza. We agreed that we would be prepared for further demonstrations as needed, telling people to keep checking the website for details.

Once again – many thanks to everyone. We may need to call on you again!”
